Expect to be transported by the voices of Illumina women’s choir as they present songs from different cultures in languages and rhythms both foreign and familiar. Sung in joyful celebration, this wide variety of songs will inspire and uplift you.
Illumina’s around-the-world tour begins in Australia, as they sing entertaining arrangements of traditional songs and contemporary Australian compositions. The Choir then takes the audience to Asia, with exquisite folk songs from China (featuring harp and clarinet), and Japan. The next port of call is America, with the timeless “Shenandoah” and “Bridge Over Troubled Water”, followed by the stirring melody and pulsating percussion of the song “Oye!”, which highlights the plight of children from Guatemala.
The audience is then taken to Europe, with the very moving English folksong, “The Water of Tyne” and the exciting Spanish folksong, “Boleras Sevillanas”, complete with castanets. In stark contrast, the next bracket features two Eastern European songs, with traditional open throated singing. The Illumina journey ends with two exuberant folk songs from Africa complete with movement and drumming.
What better way to conclude this amazing and inspiring around-the-world adventure, than the uplifting and famous song by Louis Armstrong, “What a Wonderful World”!
